| Aluminium Melting/Holding
furnaces |

| Casting Process
and Aluminum Melting/Holding Furnaces |
| Casting is a process in which
metal that has been melted to a liquid state is
poured into a mold to create products. Aluminum
is currently the material of choice for car engines,
because of its lightness and ease of recycling;
therefore it is used when casting major engine parts.
Because casting process requires aluminum that has
been melted into a liquid state, an aluminum melting/holding
furnace is required. |

| Aluminum melting/holding
furnaces incorporate a heater to heat the furnace
casing, in order to maintain the aluminum in a molten
state. However, because there is a serious lag in
response between the furnace incorporating the heater
and the molten aluminum in the desired state, these
are generally controlled using a method called cascade
control. This connects 2 series controllers in (Controlled
temperature signal is input as the proces value
to one controller, and its manipulate value output
is connected to another controller as the remote
set point.), however using SDC40A with its built-in
cascade functionality means that a single series
controller can be used. Furthermore, the furnace
can be damaged if the furnace temperature programmable
controller initiates a rapid increase in temperature;
therefore this is used to gradually raise temperature
when commencing furnace operation. |
